The Schwa Update

Students seem to be enjoying reading The Schwa. They have read up to chapter 16.

Assignment update:

  1. Vocabulary - if you have not done so already, make sure your vocabulary log is updated to page 137 (translucent).
  2. H.W. #1 - complete Skill: Schwa Sound, p. 84 in your booklet. This h.w. assignment was due on 4/29. Late work will only receive a maximum of 50 points.

  3. H.W. #2 - this h.w. assignment was due on 5/6/09.

    1.  Update your vocabulary log to page 91 (cusp). 

    2. Answer questions for chapters 10/11.

Drama Flip Charts

Students completed their Drama Flip Chart today. Some students were allowed to finish their chart at home, but this must be returned tomorrow for full credit.

Students demonstrated their understanding of each drama term by creating an Elements of Drama Flip Chart. They will finish this chart tomorrow. Here are the instructions:

1. Define each term (40 pts)

Drama Continued (All Classes)

Students finished reviewing elements of drama:

  • Plot: The action of a play and almost always revolves around the conflict
  • Setting: When and where the play takes place
  • Act: A group of two or more scenes that create a major division of a play

  • Scene: A segment or part of the action - usually happening in a particular place

  • Stage Directions: Describes details of the setting, as well as how characters interact with each other

  • Playwright: The author of the play

Drama: All Classes (Reading and Read 180)

Students explored elements of poetry:

  • Theme: Central idea or message
  • Cast of Characters: Listing of members in a play - usually describes the relationship between each other
  • Dialogue: Cconversation between two characters
  • Monologue: A speech by one character that is alone on stage

Students identified these elements after watching movie clips. Students also created a monologue and dialogue. Some students got a chance to act out their monologue - very good work!

In addition the above activities, Read 180 explored ways to summarize an article. Steps needed to summarize an article:

  • Find the tpoic of the text
  • Look for impotant details about the topic
  • In your own words, restate the topic and important details

Up Next: stage directions, acts& scenes, plot and setting

H.W.: None (unless you need to finish creating your monologue and dialogue)

Analyzing Poetry

Students read several poems and analyzed two of the poems. We will continue analyzing poems tomorrow and then review for the poetry unit test. Students also reviewed free verse and stanza as these two terms needed clarification.

Reminder: tomorrow is the last day of the quarter - all work must be submitted by tomorrow.

Identifying Elements of Poetry

Students read various poetry selections and answered questions about each selection. This activity allowed students to practice identifying poetry elements. This activity was done with a partner.
