Week of May 9th (Week 7)

Mejak Small Group LA:

Phonemic Awareness/Phonics:

Students identify stressed syllables in multisyllable words

  Word Recognition/Spelling:

Students will also use a strategy to decode multisyllable words by breaking them into decodable parts then apply this strategy while reading words in context.  Students will also practice fluent single word reading

Grammar & Usage

Students will diagram compound sentences

 Speaking & Writing

Students will use the Blueprint for Reading for the above story to transfer the main ideas onto the Blueprint for Writing Outline.  They will also use their outline to write an introductory paragraph for a multiparagraph composition.

Vocabulary Morphology

Students use the meaning of prefixes to define words

Listening/Reading Comprehension

Students will listen to "The First Transcontinental Railroad" to identify main ideas in the text

Students will respond orally and in writing to questions about the The First Transcontinental Railroad” using signal words distinguish, compare, and describe.

Listening/Reading Comprehension

Students will also use Sortegories Interactive CD to practice sentence building.  Students will discuss the literary device of “mood”.  They will listen to “The First Transcontinental Railroad” for factual information and develop strategies to build context based vocabulary.

Students identify the number of syllables in multi-syllable words then they identify vowel sounds in each syllable

Word Recognition/Spelling:

Students review compound words and distinguish compound words from words of two or more syllables.  They will also practice fluent single-word reading.

Grammar & Usage

 Students will analyze compound sentences to select appropriate conjunction and, or, but.

 Speaking & Writing

 Students will respond orally and in writing to questions about The First Transcontinental Railroad” using signal words distinguish, compare, and describe.

 Students will build expanded sentences to show comprehension of text using a picture from their student text and vocabulary from the unit.

 Speaking & Writing

 Students will analyze a multiparagraph sample for "Mysteries of Antarctica" to identify the connection between the introductory paragraph and the main ideas and details in the body paragraphs. 

Vocabulary Morphology

Students will develop rich associations through multiple meanings and use the meanings of idioms composed of the cumulative vocabulary

Challenge Text:

Students listen to “Continental Drift” to expand vocabulary and answer comprehension questions and engage in critical thinking discussions.

Listening/Reading Comprehension

Students will analyze a multiparagraph sample for "Mysteries of Antarctica to identify the links between the topic and main idea

 Students will build expanded sentences to show comprehension of ext using a picture from their student text and vocabulary from the unit.

 Speaking & Writing

 Students will transfer their topic, main idea, and details to the Blueprint for Writing Outline based on the story of "Mysteries in Antarctica".  Students will also analyze a multiparagraph sample to identify the connection between the intro paragraph and the main ideas and details in the body of a paragraph.

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

Students will review syllable types closed, r-controlled, open, and final silent e. 

Vocabulary Morphology

Students will develop rich associations through multiple meanings and use the meanings of idioms composed of the cumulative vocabulary

Word Recognition/Spelling

 Students will demonstrate mastery of the Unit Vocabulary using CONTENT MASTERY SPELLING POST TEST 1

 STUDENTS WILL REVIEW IRREGULAR PAST TENSE, PRESENT TENSE, AND FUTURE TENSE VERB FORMS

Listening & Reading Comprehension/Speaking & Writing

 STUDENTS WILL USE THE BLUEPRINT FOR READING FOR MYSTERIES OF ANTARCTICA TO ANALYZE THE TEXT STRUCTURE AND IDENTIFY THE TOPIC, MAIN IDEA, AND DETAILS TO BUILD COMPREHENSION.  STUDENTS WILL ALSO TRANSFER THEIR TOPIC, MAIN IDEA, AND DETAILS TO THEIR BLUEPRINT FOR WRITING OUTLINE.

 WE WILL REVIEW CUMULATIVE SOUND SPELLING CORRESPONDENCES WITH EMPHASIS ON CLOSED, R-CONTROLLED, OPEN, AND FINAL SILENT E SYLLABLES

Vocabulary Morphology

 STUDENTS WILL REVIEW THE MEANINGS OF PREFIXES IN WORDS AND APPLY SPELLING RULES TO CHANGE THE TENSE OF A VERB OR VER PHRASE TO PAST, PRESENT OR FUTURE.

Word Recognition/Spelling

STUDENTS WILL CATEGORIZE SYLLABLE TYPES AND THEN COMBINE THEM TO BUILD WORDS.  THEY WILL WRITE DICTATED SENTENCES WITH CORRECT SPELLING OF HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS.  sTUDENTS WILL ALSO PRACTICE FLUENT SINGLE WORD READING
