Last Three Days of School

MONDAY, May 23, 2011

Today students finished watching The Westing Game movie titled "Get a Clue."  Students compared the two narrative forms of this story and overwhelmingly decided that the book was much better than the movie version.

IF YOU HAVE NOT YET BROUGHT A STAMP FOR YOUR REPORT CARD ENVELOPE TO YOUR HOMEROOM TEACHER, YOU NEED TO DO SO TOMORROW.  Otherwise, parents will have to come to Lovinggood to pick up report cards.

REMINDERS:  No book bags, outside beverages, or yearbooks should be brought to school tomorrow or Wednesday.  Tomorrow is an early dismissal day.  Seventh Grade will go to 1st and 2nd period classes only for final exams and will be dismissed at 12:30.  Wednesday, Seventh Grade students will go to 5th and 6th period classes only for final exams and will be dismissed at 12:30.

IMPORTANT:  You will need a #2 pencil and at least three sheets of notebook paper for the LA final exam.

TUESDAY, May 24, 2011

Seventh Grade will take 1st and 2nd period final exams today.  For Language Arts, you will need a #2 pencil and at least three sheets of notebook paper. Early dismissal will be at 12:30.  Remember, you will not be able to ride the bus home with another student today or tomorrow.  You must ride your bus home.

WEDNESDAY, May 25, 2011

Seventh Grade will take 5th and 6th period final exams today. For Langage Arts, you will need a #2 pencil and at least three sheets of notebook paper.  Early dismissal will be at 12:30. Good Luck in the 8th grade and I hope you enjoy your summer vacation!

Down to the last few days...

Today in class students took the final test over the novel The Westing Game.  Many of you did a great job writing your mystery and saving it to the correct folder on the student drive.  If you have not yet submitted your story, you need to do so by tomorrow, Friday, May 20, if you want to receive a grade for this.  If you finish typing it at home, you can email your story to me and I will save it for you, but you will have to post it to the Scholastic website yourself.  Some of you have told my that my email link from this blog is not working, so my email address is mary.horn@cobbk12.org.

HOMEWORK TONIGHT:  Finish typing your mystery if you have not turned it in.

Students completed their Mystery short stories today in class and posted them to the Scholastic website for consideration to be published.  I am excited about the quality of the work that was done, and will anxiously be monitoring Scholastic to see if any (maybe all?) our stories go "live" online.

If you didn't finish your mystery, you can finish it at home and email it to me.  I will save it to your class folder for you, however, you will have to post it to Scholastic yourself.

Tomorrow is the final test over The Westing Game.  Review your crossword study guide and look back over your quizzes and you should do well.

Good News!

Thanks to Ms. Derry's generous nature, we will be able to go to Computer Lab 622 again tomorrow! That means that if you did not finish typing your mystery during class today, you will be able to finish it tomorrow. HOWEVER, THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO 1ST PERIOD SINCE WE WILL NOT HAVE CLASS TOMORROW MORNING DUE TO THE AWARDS CEREMONY. 

If you are going to be typing your story tonight, just make sure you bring it back to class on your jump drive or email it to yourself so that you will have access to it tomorrow for class.

Today in class, students began writing their own mystery stories.  We will continue working on these for the next few days.  We will write the first drafts tomorrow during class, and after some peer critiques and editing, our revisions should b ecomplete by the end of class on Monday.  We will be in the computer lab on Tuesday to type up our final drafts.  We will be submitting our stories to the Scholastic Publishers website and hopefully, some of them will be published online to be read by hundreds of thousands of people!  After listening to their initial story ideas today, I am very excited about some of the story lines I heard and am confident that the finished products will be equally as exciting to read.

Today, all students turned in their Detective's Notebook.  I am grading them and updating Pinnacle with those grades, but it will take me several days to finish all classes. If you have not turned in this notebook, you need to do so ASAP so that you will not be missing any grades for this 9-weeks grading period.

All students were given a crossword puzzle that is due tomorrow in class.  Many of you finished, but if you did not, you are to FINISH THE CROSSWORD PUZZLE FOR HOMEWORK TONIGHT!

HOMEWORK:  Finish Crossword Puzzle if you didn't finish it in class.

We have finished reading The Westing Game and have turned in the student's Detective's Notebooks with all assignments completed.  I will be grading these and updating Pinnacle as quickly as I can, but it will take me a few days to get through all the classes.

Tomorrow we will begin writing a response to literature piece.

So many clues have been given to you in the last few chapters - how many of you have figured out the answer to the mystery of The Westing Game?  I will be grading your notebooks and will update Pinnacle this evening or tomorrow morning.  Some of you have still not taken one or both of the quizzes and you need to take care of this before it is too late.

Today in class, students had the opportunity to get caught up on the work that was assigned on Monday. After this, they read chapters 19-20-21.  In addition, the Clue Tracker activity on page 22 of the Detective's Notebook as well as the vocabulary and comprehension activities were assigned for the chapters that were read today.
